Sheppard AFB (airshow), Wichita Falls, TX (KSPS) - 20 October 2007

This was a last minute trip for me as I had a Dallas flight to use before the end of the year or I would lose it.

Myself and Jason stayed close by the nigh before and were surprised in the morning that the roads leading into the show were very thin with traffic. This probably had something to do with the Alliance show being held a few hours away at the same time, meaning the large catchment area of Fort Worth would be traveling this far with an airshow on their doorstep.

We attempted to enter via the main gate only to be told to use a gate at the side of the base – a further attempt down the road finally got us to the correct gate with no line of cars at all. It may have been helpful if there had been some signs to direct us to the gate – as it was we didn't even see an advertising around that the was even a show taking place!

We saw many lines of C-130s and KC-135s being used as instructional airframes but there was no access which was a shame.

The static display was well laid out and spaced nicely for photos. Highlights included a pair of German Tornado's and a small Canadian contingent of a pair of CT-155 (Hawks) and a single CT-156 (Harvard II), as well as an example of each of the instructional fighter airframes from the base.

The flight-line was very long which gave ample space for everyone to see the flying action, and despite the lack of a big name display team, the flying display was varied and full – in fact not having a display team probably helped the overall show to be honest.

This is definitely a show I will think of attending in the future and the sun is in a good position for most of the day too!
