NAS Whidbey Island, WA (KNUW) - 29 April 2011

I've never shot aviation in Washington but found myself arriving in Seattle to travel north to shoot an A-3 Skywarrior arriving at NAS Whidbey Island for preservation. There'll be more on that flight later on.

In the mean time we shot outside the fence for about 20 minutes until it was time to go inside the airfield. The sky was its typical white overcast being next to the sea while we were outside, but by the time we travelled through the gates the sun had come out.

The nice people at Whidbey had laid on a small static display, which included two Centennial of Naval Aviation (CoNA) specially painted airframes. EA-18G Growler from VAQ-129 is painted in a blue colour scheme that represents F4U-4 Corsairs that were based aboard the USS Shangri-La with Air Group 85 (VBF-85) during World War II.

The other CoNA aircraft was P-3C painted to represent one of the two an EP-3B aircraft that saw short service with Taiwan's "Black Bat" Squadron before being transferred to VQ-1 in Da Nang during the Vietnam War.

A nice few hours spent on the base although there wasn't much activity due to it being a Friday.
