Lapsus Linguae - You Got Me Fraiche [mlp]
Yes! I've been waiting for a copy of this fucker for months now, I've had it for about 4 days and it's taken over my system (both stereo and nervous).

This is a remarkable progression from the clutch of 5 songs that made up their first demo/single. Don't get me wrong, I'm crazy about those tracks too but this is new shit is just nuts, 32 mins of white hot abrasiveness, subtle electronics and stunning and I really mean, stunning beauty.

Fuck Godspeed and Mogwai and Silver Mt Zion and their fucking tedious, loud/quiet, frowny, stringy, droney epics. Lapsus make them sound like a crowd of spoilt, pouty lipped pretentious, try-hard, art-student tossbags forever scraping and scratching...

There's so much in here and it's driven by the most amazing self-conviction I've heard in a young band, usually it just translates as a lot of bluster, bathos and teen angst. But, like early Fall albums, you get the feeling that there is a strong agenda behind the lyrics, a creepy and unsettling dogma, check the artwork, it's not normal at-all. What is going on with this lot?

As for the music, well like I said there's much rocking in the vein of some of their earlier songs. Track two 'The Terse Crimp' is so hellishly abrasive and confrontational in places it leaves my heart in my mouth when I turn it up loud, but even it disintegrates into beautiful solo piano, and then massive, proggy ascending block chord rock-out sections that Van Der Graff Generator would have been proud of.

Oh Christ, there's just too much science here to properly describe, I'm not going to take this album apart any further, why ruin the mystery just for the sake of a few people, fuck that. If you at-all have a heart then this album will rock your world, of course at 32 mins it's perfect in that it's too short and consequently leaves you reaching for the play button again and again. If you can't take this album and would rather seek solace within the parochial confines of say, 'Come On Die Young' then your soul is truly a cardboard fucking box.

God-bless Simon Williams for having the good grace to unleash this mini-album on the largely unsuspecting public. He's due a knighthood.
