There couldn’t be a nicer location than Red Rocks to the south west of Denver in Morrison.
Although the sun stayed away for most of the afternoon it did not deter more than 25,000 spectators enjoying the thrills and spills of the racing.
2008 saw a doubling of soapbox events this year with Denver being the climax to a four race season.
The race itself is scored by a panel of judges on speed, creativity and showmanship. In addition each team had to perform a short skit prior to lunching their vehicle and driver(s) down the course and through the hay-bail chicane, where the majority of crashes were expected to be seen.
Many did perish at the chicane, but a few also came to grief at the finish when either their steering or brake system failed to work.
The narrow confines of the track at Red Rocks did cause the crowd to be somewhat squashed in at various points, but thankfully the organizers erected huge TV screens at the top and bottom of the course so people could still enjoy the event.
There was a huge turnout of 45 teams competing with entries ranging from very hi-tech to the blatantly ridiculous.
More info on these events can be found at the Red Bull Soapbox Race site.
