Henry Rollins (spoken word) - Denver, Paramount Theatre Wednesday 15th January 2003
This should be an interesting gig. The last time I saw Henry Rollins live was with Black Flag in London, at a time when most readers weren’t even born. Even then I was still at secondary school and not driving or drinking yet, so it must have been in the mid to late 70’s.

Anyway, after consulting a couple of people whose opinions I take notice of, they both told me to go and see his spoken word show. So I did.

The first thing that struck me was that Henry seemed much smaller in real life. I always had this image of a big, muscular bear of a man. But standing alone on the vast stage with only a microphone stand as company, he looked not much bigger than me… and anyone who knows me knows that I’m one of the short arses of this world.

It’s hard to sumarise the show with any quotes, as they came thick and fast, but he came across as very articulate, with sensible views on everything – in fact really all the things that we think but most are afraid to say. The two and a half hour rant seemed to last about an hour, and he only had to deal with one heckler, who he immediately put down and shut right up.

Rough guide to topics covered… student gigs, Christmas, age, performing live, voice-overs, Spanish, news stations, Winona Ryder, prison, millionaire sentencing, American soldiers in foreign countries, entertaining the troops, porn stars, butt tattoo, late night shopping, sloth woman, Southern Californian up-speak, talking to females, mechanics, internet porn, Joe Strummer, Bono, ULU, Americans abroad, arena rock, The Clash, Johnny Cash, laminates, k-fuck shirt, Frank Black, Jimmy Carter, Billboard top 200, well adjusted white music, Ian McKaye, Blackeyes, xmas cards, ritualised gratitude, the job of the artist, Ozzy Ozbourne party, Mark E. Smith, Robbie Williams, Liam Gallager, Colorado intense weather, Hummers in Los Angeles (the dick-head), the Kennedy “legacy”, being an American, Canadians, fake showbiz kissing, being on the Jay Lenno show, Catherine Zeta-Jones, film scripts, auditioning for Armageddon, auditioning for Badboys 2, Will Smith, the KKK, hate e-mail, letter to whitey (kill whitey), impending Iraq war, cowboy President, N. Korea, American being the biggest enemy of America, stop being a victim by suing, looking after each other.

Also he did the best visual impression of Ozzy I’ve ever seen!

Genuis!
